Re: Scratching my head!
Tue, November 7, 2006 - 3:00 PMNot precisely no action, after all you posted;-)
I think there's a sequence of learning that happens with voting issues. Often people become aware of electronic voting problems and then look into the issue. Then they learn that it's not an easy partisan issue and that the security of vote counts isn't only about voting machine technology. Basically people discover there are systematic faults all along the way and no quick fixes come along.
We're not organized at this tribe. Maybe we should or could be, but the fact remains we're basically a group of people who have discovered that the American system of elections is fraught with problems.
Something that's pleased me very much is the topic has come up on other tribes I'm in. Really that's a good thing because there are still lots of people who haven't even started looking at the issue of election problems. Rather than a post on this tribe, a post on some other tribes--link back here if you think it's a good thread--probably will make the best difference.
www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx Problems reported even before election day. Talking Points Memo www.talkingpointsmemo.com/ is doing a good job of reporting about problems.

Re: Scratching my head!
Tue, November 7, 2006 - 9:14 PMMaybe everyone is busy poll watching, blogging elsewhere, stumping for candidates, and on and on. The last thing most of us needed to do right now is cloister ourselves away with our computers in the virtual world and just write about the issue.
There will be more to discuss later as the election unfolds and more and more problem places are scrutinized.

Re: Scratching my head!
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 2:45 PMI took it upon myself to put this tribe together. However, as time passed... i no longer personally update this tribe any longer.
If you look into "Hacking Democracy" the HBO special you reference in another post. Andy Stephenson, the red headed guy in the beginning, who dies.. was my friend, and I ran his campaign for Secretary of State here in Washington. When I started this tribe... we activists were still trying to get anyone to listen. However, right now there are literally dozens and dozens of very active voting activist oranizations that sorta undermine the necessity for this tribe.
Heck now we have an HBO movie!
However, it seems this tribe stays slighly active as a repository of news and info on the subject. But has never really caught on in the "Tribe" world, and is instead a sub genre of discussion in the political tribes. I invite anyone who would like to update the news, or to start conversations. The tribe is yours to do as you see fit. It could still be expanded.
I however, have moved on to working against Vote by Mail. And put a blog out on the subject:
novbm.wordpress.com
There's plenty of people that know the dangers of electronic voting machines. However VBM is seriously flawed... and there are no activists really organized to oppose it.
Anyway, thanks for the posts... keep it up! If you want... I'd even hand over the reigns to someone who would like to moderate. Mostly what moderation entails so far is removing irrelevant posts.
Regards,

Re: Scratching my head!
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 6:23 PMThanks for checking in Gentrified. It's true that this tribe functions rather on the periphery of tribe.net but it serves some purpose. Really it's a good thing to have many outlets for information sharing. As you've moved on to the issue of voting by mail, I think most of us find that it's important to concentrate our efforts in particular places. Voting is so central to a functioning democracy, I'll always be interested and alert, but it's not my area of focus.
So to any of you who are interested in taking the lead you've got followers like me:-) In any case I'm glad the tribe is left up and people do post here sporadically.
